Subject: Another climate win!

Dear friends,
*Huge news out of Japan* – a top newspaper is reporting a major shift in
climate policy, and citing Avaaz members as one the reasons why!
The paper describes a meeting this month *in the Prime Minister's office.
The Environment Minister held up the full page ad we ran in newspapers at
the Bali summit,* showing the Prime Minister joining President Bush on the
'Titanic' of global climate disaster with a message from 90,000 Avaaz
members calling for new emissions targets. "The world sees Japan as a force
resisting change!" the minister declared. Are we really ok with this?" Other
ministers also spoke up, and *the government is now setting a 2020 emissions
target.[1]*
This shift in Japanese policy is a real victory - they are one of the
largest polluters, were a last ally of President Bush in resisting these
targets, and are the host of the upcoming crucial G8 summit. Congratulations
to everyone for the positive role we all played in this!
*This story is also a great example of why Avaaz works.* Global public
opinion is powerful and can make a difference, but we need to work together
to make our voices heard through rapid, targeted, smart tactics and
messaging that reaches decision makers before it's too late.
We had just hours to design and buy the ad after Japan took its position at
the Bali summit. To make sure we can respond that fast in the future, *we're
launching a "Crisis Action Fund" so we'll have the money on hand when we
need to act. Can we raise 50,000 Euros this week for this new fund?* Click
below to make a totally secure donation:

*2008 will be a big year for climate change - we have less than 12 months to
get a new global treaty.* It will also be a big year for the Middle East,
for Burma, for global poverty and many other major issues. For all of these
situations, our impact will be much greater if we can respond rapidly to
moments of crisis and opportunity.
*Avaaz never accepts any money from governments or corporations,* because
honest and effective campaigns require complete independence. Instead, we
rely on individual Avaaz members to fund our work together, so Avaaz is
accountable only to the people we serve; we're people-powered. Japan is the
latest of a series of victories for people power in 2007. Let's do it again
and again in 2008!
With much appreciation and hope,
Ricken, Pascal, Ben, Galit, Ben B., Iain, Paul, Graziela and the whole Avaaz
team
